And he’s off

And he’s off

After a not so great December off running and training (note to self: don’t do that again) where my mental health took a nose dive for the worse (another note to self: don’t miss taking meds again!), I finally managed to start my running for the year. I took a trip to the Running Show at the NEC yesterday which was absolutely fantastic, and got a chance to ask Ben Parker (instagram.com/benparkerfitness) about training mentally for an Ultra (yeah like I’m physically ready for it!). The best piece of advice? Go running when you really don’t want to. It was -5℃ outside and icy as hell when I got home, so I went out for a run around 8:30pm which allowed me the best odds of breaking my neck and plodded my first run of the year:

Torvill and Dean moment

Just need to keep the momentum going like last year, when I went from having five years off running (dodgy knees) to a marathon to keep my head in order. This year I’m going to go for: The London100 bike race, the full London Duathlon and the Thames Path Ultra and a bunch of other stuff of lesser “Oh shit what have I done” magnitude running type things.

My training plan to start off with is:

  • Drop down to 11½ stone to save the knees (started at 13½ stone this year compared to 14st 8lbs last year)
  • 5k time to 22 minutes
  • 10k time to 50-50 minutes
  • Hit over 401k steps for the February 401 Challenge (www.the401foundation.co.uk). I have only signed up for 100k steps to take off the pressure 🙂
  • Half Marathon back to my pre 40 year old of 1:50 (now 52 and feeling it)
  • Keep on strength training with the amazing Jackie Harding – Soultrainer (www.instagram.com/soultrainerbms/ www.facebook.com/soultrainer1)
  • Put in some longer distance runs of up to 31miles / 50k to get me used to half the Thames Path 100 run
  • Follow the exploits of a chap called James Dunn who did a great talk at The Running Show (instagram.com/morningcoffeerun/) for inspiration
  • Hug my wife more and tell her I love her (payback for being an insufferable bipolar bastard in December)
  • Buy my wife some more OCR kit in case the above doesn’t work 🙂

Reckon I can do that by the end of March with a little bit of effort.

Really, oh shit what have I signed myself up for. Muppet.
