I’m walking on sunshine. Bollox. Walk like a Egyptian. Utter bollox. Run Rudolph Run. Rudolph don’t run, he flies. Run, baby, run. Babies crawl. I would walk 500 miles? Over a couple of weeks maybe. Run 50 miles in a forest? That’s fine.

Earlier this year I set out my list of challenges for 2023.

  1. Complete the RideLondon-Essex 100-mile challenge in May
  2. Complete the full London Duathlon in September
  3. Run the Thames Path 100k Challenge the following week

I have the first one coming up next week and am looking forward to it. I’ve only been out a few times on my new bike, but I have been running long distances a lot so I should have the stamina. My balls will take a beating though and vaseline is my new best friend. I have to complete it otherwise my wife will kill me given how much I spent on the bike.

The second one has gone out the window though as I have a family wedding to go to in Wales.

I am still training for the last one which I entered because a friend called Damian asked me to join him. My wife (and quite a few other people) thought I was bat shit crazy

So I had to fill the gap left by the cancellation of number two somehow, and I have. When I say fill, what I mean is  I’ve poured two bottles of Jack Daniels into a shot glass in one go.

The first bottle of Jack is the Cotswold Way Ultra Challenge in June. That’s 53k and 1630m in elevation around the Chiltern Hills. That’s a lot, but it’s not quite enough.

So I’m going to order the second bottle of Jack in a couple of weeks after I have done a test run. The Wendover Woods 50 mile trail run is not for the faint hearted, but I quite fancy it and I know I’m going to enter it regardless.

Entering this race does provide another opportunity (along with the Thames Path 100k) to qualify for another race.

In 2022 I went from just about scraping through a 10k, to being able to run a marathon again. In 2023 I am going from marathon distances (still doing three or four this year), to running a 100k race. So what would 2024 bring about?

I volunteered at my first ultra marathon event a few weeks back, manning the rest stop in Cookham for the Thames Path 100m race. Outside of being a great day out, it made me want to run longer distances for as long as my knees hold out. This is insane considering the state of people I saw at mile 38 in Cookham; in particular how bad their feet were. But I’m not that sane these days, so to me it makes sense.

So if I manage either the Wendover Woods race or the Thames Path 100k in under 15 hours, then I can enter a 100 mile race next year. I will give my wife permission to get me sectioned if I do this.
