I’m not vegan, but whole food plant based meals – what harm can a few do?

I’m not vegan, but whole food plant based meals – what harm can a few do?

It might be front of mind because I have just read the book “Finding Ultra” by the massively accomplished ultra endurance athlete Rich Roll, but eating too many processed foods has been niggling me for a while now and I’ve wanted to do something about it. Time for a change in diet to accompany me on my journey over the next year I think.

Introducing a strict diet may have been an issue for me when I was working in London, or when what food tasted like made it good rather than what went into it (although I am well aware that great ingredients can often make a mediocre cook look good!), but those shackles no longer exist.

Thanks to Covid I now work from home most of the time, and thanks to my wife (sorry hun) having developed an intolerance to half the food on the planet after our son was born, I can control what goes into the meals I eat during the day, and my wife will ensure that what we eat every evening is also clean and healthy (I could claim to help out with the cooking during the week, but that’s simply not the case).

Her health journey started when our amazing son was born. With the gift of life, also came an unwanted gift of a change to the make-up of her body, in particular to whatever it was that controls her weight – call it her metabolism.

Whilst living a normal healthy lifestyle, no weight dropped off after she had Jimmy; and as far as I could remember some weight went on. I was blinded by love so I really did not notice that my wife’s appearance had changed, but she did. Then all of a sudden, certain foods she ate (soy, wheat, red meat, green peppers…) started to make her blow up like a balloon within five minutes. Not fair. She was not happy at all about what had happened to her, so she did something about it.

A new approach to food, combined with considerable amounts of exercise (like shit loads of exercise) has seen her transform her appearance, losing around 8 stone / 110 pounds. She also now has more energy than a thousand acre wind farm. She has always been stunning, but now she is really stunning. Phwoar.

I am never going to be stunning, but changing my diet should hopefully give me more energy. This is particularly important to me as a currently take bipolar medication that drains my energy levels down to about 50% every day.

Outside of this, my impetus is that I have just hit fifty three and want to live as long as I can, and part of that is making sure I eat well. On top of that, I want to get incredibly fit over the next year (and forever more hopefully!) so that I can complete some very long ultra marathon races. Not only should a changed diet give me more energy, but it should hopefully allow me to shed the small belly I have that I need to get rid of to hit my running weight.

Having looked at the transformation of Rich Roll, I thought why not introduce whole food plant based meals into my life, so I am going to give it a go.

Just in case my sister in law is reading this and is jumping around for joy, I’ve not turned vegan. I’m also never going to be Rich Roll. My plan is to have a whole food based diet for breakfast and lunch, and then to eat healthily every evening (which might involve more plant based meals). Longer term you never know.

If you’re one of those people who looks at a green smoothie with spinach, kale, hemp seeds, bananas, pineaple, flax meal and coconut water in it and tries not to vomit, try one – they are actually delicious!

I even have evidence that I drank it!

I have only picked a few smoothie recipies from his website, but I’m just going to order Rich Roll’s book The Plantpower Way to help me along my journey.

Now, I better go and stir my lentil, chickpea and mixed bean chilli.
